ARCP Requirements

Introduction

The Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) is a formal process that reviews a trainee’s progress throughout the training year. This page outlines the requirements for ICM trainees in the Thames Valley region to successfully pass their ARCP.

Documentation Requirements

For All Trainees

  1. Educational Supervisor’s Structured Report

    • Must be completed by your educational supervisor
    • Should summarize your progress throughout the training year
  2. Curriculum Requirements

    • Completion of stage-appropriate capabilities in practice (CiPs)
    • Evidence of key capabilities for each CiP
    • Appropriate level of supervision for each CiP
  3. Logbook of Procedures

    • Documentation of all critical care procedures
    • Evidence of progression in skill acquisition
  4. Multiple Consultant Reports (MCRs)

    • Minimum of 4 per year
    • Should cover different aspects of clinical practice
  5. Multi-Source Feedback (MSF)

    • Minimum of 12 responses
    • Should include healthcare professionals from various backgrounds
  6. Case-Based Discussions (CBDs)

    • Minimum of 6 per year
    • Should cover a range of clinical presentations
  7. DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills)

    • Evidence of competence in stage-appropriate procedures
  8. Clinical Evaluation Exercise (CEX)

    • Minimum of 6 per year
    • Should cover different clinical scenarios
  9. Reflection

    • Evidence of reflective practice
    • Minimum of 4 structured reflections per year

Stage-Specific Requirements

Stage 1

  • Satisfactory completion of Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC)
  • Evidence of progression in general aspects of ICM

Stage 2

  • Successful completion of FFICM Primary examination
  • Evidence of special skills acquisition as appropriate

Stage 3

  • Successful completion of FFICM Final examination
  • Evidence of management and leadership skills

ARCP Outcomes

The ARCP panel will issue one of the following outcomes:

  1. Outcome 1: Satisfactory progress – achieving progress and competencies at the expected rate
  2. Outcome 2: Development of specific competencies required – additional training time not required
  3. Outcome 3: Inadequate progress – additional training time required
  4. Outcome 4: Released from training programme
  5. Outcome 5: Incomplete evidence presented – additional training time may be required
  6. Outcome 6: Gained all required competencies – recommendation for completion of training

Preparation Tips

  1. Keep your portfolio updated throughout the year
  2. Schedule regular meetings with your educational supervisor
  3. Plan assessments well in advance of ARCP deadlines
  4. Attend required courses and training days
  5. Address any concerns about progression early
